BEAC unveils new coins, with 200 FCFA as major innovation

The Bank of Central African States, BEAC has introduced a new range of coins, dubbed “Type 2024,” which includes a major innovation of the 200 FCFA coin.
The new coins were launched and put into use on April 2, 2025. These new coins is a significant addition to the existing range, which addresses the long-standing issue of coin shortages in the CEMAC region.
The introduction of the 200 FCFA coin is expected to provide greater flexibility in cash transactions, making it easier for businesses and individuals to conduct daily transactions.
Lack of coins has been a persistent problem in the CEMAC region, leading to difficulties in providing change and facilitating transactions. The new 200 FCFA coin is designed to alleviate this issue, providing a more convenient way to do cash transactions.
In a press release issued by Governor Yvon Sana Bangui, it states “The type 2024 coin range, which includes nine denominations, is designed to combine enhanced security, environmental sustainability, and a distinctive design”.
The coins feature specific engravings illustrating subregional integration and the emergence of CEMAC states, highlighting themes such as education, women’s empowerment, and environmental protection.
The new coins will circulate alongside existing ones, and the BEAC has encouraged the populations of CEMAC to adopt these new coins and make them a part of their daily lives.
