Barrister Mbah wins Bar council presidency on a dramatic election day
It took three days for the new President of the Cameroon Bar Council to be known.
More than 2000 members of the Cameroon Bar Association converged on the Yaounde Sports Complex on Saturday, June 18, 2022, to elect a new team to pilot the affairs of the Bar, but the election of the Bar Council Members and the General Assembly took a different twist.
After Barrister Kless Kouanou from the civil law was elected President of the General Assembly on Sunday, June 19, Common Law Lawyers said it would be fair to respect their unwritten law where both presidents come from the different law systems.
But three civil law candidates tabled their candidacy for the Bar Council presidency, creating chaos as Common law Lawyers expressed anger over their noncompliance with the unwritten law.
Two Civil Law candidates withdrew from the race leaving one Civil Law candidate and three Common law candidates.
unable to arrive at a consensual candidate, the Common Law candidates headed for the polls with Barrister Mbah Eric Mbah, who hails from, the Momo Division, North West region, emerging as the winner.
The new Bar Council President, Barrister Mbah Eric Mbah said his victory on Monday was not only for him but for the entire bar. He acknowledged that there were some irregularities in the process and reasons why it took so long for things to be put in order. The new Batonnier secured 1285 votes against Memong Phillipe 969, Ntoko Justice 210, and Titanji Ernest 75 votes.
