Ban on CANAL Plus Elles fully effective, NCC President confirms

CANAL Plus International has ceased the transmission of signals for the channel CANAL Plus Elles on the Cameroon territory, as observed by several users and confirmed by the President of the National Communication Council, Joseph Chebongkeng Kalabuse.

He made the confirmation four days after the NCC issued a correspondence, highlighting the non-respect of a warning sent in June 2023 and urging the company to immediately stop the broadcast of the denounced channel. It had been identified to be conveying homosexuality and obscene content to the Cameroonian public.

Joseph Chebongkeng said the suspension of the channel became effective from September 25.

“If in our monitoring, we realize that they are continuing in the practice, the suspension is going to be maintained till they change” he warned.

The NCC President said the institution is simply respecting Article 347 of the Cameroon penal code. “We are simply applying this law” he indicated, further pointing out that “there are also pornographic films that are prohibited”.

The Minister of Communication, Rene Emmanuel Sadi has also added his voice to the campaign, prescribing firm measures against the promotion of “such intolerable practices”.
