Bamenda university: students accuse medical doctors of extortion, bribery

By Nukapuh .P

Some students of the University of Bamenda say the medical staff of the university is demanding unnecessary money from them when they go for medical certificates and other services.

In a chat with CNA, some of the students said some amongst the doctors even go ahead to collect bribes from students to sign their documents, without them going through the normal check up process.

“I bought a medical certificate at the hospital for 1,500frs instead of the usual 900frs as written on it. The lady said if I don’t want it I should go,” a student said.

The same student, whose name we can’t mention for safety purposes added that some staff of the university medical hospital have developed a habit of collecting money from students in exchange of fraudulent health documents deeming them ‘medically fit’ to enroll in the institution.

“At times students will stand on long lines at the health unit for the process and some will just enter the office, give theirs [money] to come back after and collect when every information has been filled”.

“I doubt if authorities of the university do check what is happening at some for these units because it is a total mess,” the student added.

We also gathered that the situation usually worsens when the academic year is just beginning.

This is not the first time that students of the Bamenda University are complaining about bribery and malpractice yet school authorities have remained silent.
