The European Union Ambassador to Cameroon, Jean-Marc has urged youths in Bamenda, North West region to delve into the political affairs of their country, Cameroon. The diplomat challenged them to brave every odds get their names on the electoral register and endeavor to vote on election day come 2025 as a way to get the change they have long desired.
“Please register, it is very important for your future. Decide on what you want with your vote.” Stressed the EU Ambassador, H.E Jean-Marc.
Though many wish to exercise this civic responsibility, the prevailing insecurity and separatist threats constitute a barrier.
Some managed to register on the electoral list by adopting security strategies.
“I just had to make sure my identity is not known.”
“It’s my civic duty. My voice and vote as a youth count”.
Youth bodies have also amplified the call for young people in the crisis regions to be brave citizens and shape the future of Cameroon with their participation in the electoral process.
In 2018, separatists frustrated elections in the Anglophone regions through threats and lockdowns. Attacks on polling stations and voters were orchestrated as a means to instill fear within the population who then, massively boycotted the election for fear of the unknown. Even the deployment of defense and security forces did not assure their security.
