Bamenda denizen decries police complaisant with internet fraudsters
A man living in Bamenda, North West region, who chose to be anonymous, accused the Policemen of making a living out of the pockets of internet fraudsters instead of arresting them.
“The common scenario is that they spend most of their time at control point tracking scammers for ransom. Each scammer caught bribes them with a sum of, not less than 10000 francs as many have testified. I have seen three cases where a scammer bribes for using the road as a scammer for more than 15,000 francs. It gets to the level where some notorious scammers bribe for more than 50,000 francs.” the concerned citizen told CNA.
He explained that Police now spend their time chasing suspected scammers and at some point, end up arresting innocent civilians, wondering if this is not criminality, “It’s plausible to say that the two identifiable criminals in Bamenda are police and scammers! Is this how a train police should behave in nation-building?”
“One would not be wrong to say police have concretized criminal partnership with scammers in the city of Bamenda,” he added.
A prompt follow-up by competent authorities will wipe the shame that has engulfed the Police corps, he pleaded.
“If something is not done immediately by the authorities that be, more boys and girls will be involved in scamming, and a chain- of criminality will be developed beyond our efforts to crack down.”
