Bambili: fear of health crisis as university road worsens
By Nukapuh P
Students of the University of Bamenda are worried a health crisis may hit the community following the deteriorating nature of roads in Bambili and Bambui.
According to some students, the road from Bambui right up to Bambili and into the neighborhoods are full of dust making the environment very unconducive to live in.
“Everyday I’m suffering from cough and catarrh because of too much dust. There’s dust all over right to the university. We can’t trek or take a bike to school because of abandoned road projects,” Bih Sandrine, a student explains.
Some of the students who live in Bamenda and only go to Bambili during school days say it is always a nightmare to go through the Bambui-Bambili stretch as they are bound to seat in tight unconditioned taxis with too much heat.
“The dust from Bambui to Bambili is unbearable, so each time we reach there all the glasses are locked to prevent dust from entering the car. It’s usually a difficult moment because of heat,” another student explains.
For over two years, Edge Construction Company has failed to deliver the road for proper usage to the population.
“I doubt our health conditions if we continue taking in such air yearly because it seems there is no year that they will finish the project,” Ernest, a bike rider says.
During the raining season, the same roads are usually muddy and difficult to access just like during the dry season.
Some students and inhabitants of Tubah subdivision are also of the opinion that the Mayor has failed to rehabilitate roads in the neighborhoods, which could also help students around the university.
Several businesses and houses were destroyed in 2020 when the road project was about to start but two yeas after, many say the situation is worst than before, as the road project is obloging them to live in a highly unconducive environment.
