Bafoussam: 60 holidaymakers compensated for freeing the environment of 47 000 tons of plastic waste

More than 47 000 tons of plastic waste were collected from the main streets of Bafoussam during this summer holiday period.

Poorly managed plastic waste disposals in the city of Bafoussam, West region has for the past been a major challenge in the beautification process of the town.

On July 11, 2022, the city mayor, Roger Tafam launched a plastic waste collection contest that focused on picking plastic bottles from main streets. The operation ended on Tuesday, August 30, 2022, in a ceremony to compensate the 60 participants for their efforts in keeping the streets clean during the one-month period.

The best plastic bottle pickers were rewarded cash prizes ranging from FCFA 500 000 to FCFA 50 000 depending on performances. The cash prize reward according to the City mayor is to facilitate school resumption for these youths. The figures, 47 000 tons of plastic bottles collected from major streets of the city show that the population has not yet fully taken into consideration the notion of civic responsibility, the Mayor said.
