Authorities completely abandon GSS Kombo Itindi

Villages around the Bakassi peninsula are facing severe difficulties. Inadequate education, lack of health facilities, housing, electricity and transportation are the issues inhabitants of this village face. The village of Kombo Itindi around Bakassi is one of such villages.

“The problem of accommodation is worrying. We have just a single unkempt room available for myself and 6 of the teachers that we manage to sleep in and I have partitioned a section of it as my office and we have just one class room which accommodates all classes,” the Principal of GSS Kombo Itindi Deba Samuel Egbe complains.

“It is very difficult for some of us here to live because of accommodation issues and it’s hard for us to construct better houses for ourselves. Our living condition is really bad and we are calling on the government to send us help. Mosquitoes and other insects visit us regularly and we have kids with us. We do not want to mention health facilities because it is the worst of them all. No hospitals to carter for us and we often have to travel far to get medical attention when we get sick,” Tamjong Theodore adds.

The locality is reported to have about 32 fishing settlements and produce large amounts of cray fish and more.

“It is true that rural education here is a major aspect but we are working hand in gloves with the council to developing more projects and we are here to resolve the issues in the Bakassi peninsula. Kombo Itindi is the heart of Bakassi and we are currently working on the water supply project as we have made available water tanks so during the dry season we can wash and filter them so the population can consume water considering that sea water is not good for human consumption,” Ajah Theophilus Asanji, Director of CEAC( Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry) in Kombo Itindi says.

“We want to plead with the government to provide us good water because we have been struggling again and again and help us with security measures because often we get attacked by armed robbers who make away with fish. Teachers use to have Bakassi allowances sent to us by the government but this was suppressed 6 years ago. We pray the government can reinstate that to atleast F CFA 30.000 a month,” Etonde Cornelius, Mayor of Kombo Itindi pleads.
