The death toll could rise as dozens of injured persons fled into the bushes while others crossed over to Nigeria.

Early Sunday, May 29, 2022, Ambazonia forces invaded the villages of Obonyi and Kajifu in the Akwaya subdivision, in the South West region, CNA has been told.

These villages border the Boki area in Cross River State, Nigeria. A Nigerian news outlet, Daily Trust has said a former member of the Cross River House of Assembly, Chief Cletus Obun told reporters that come Cameroonians have fled into the Bashu community.

On Sunday, Separatists invaded the two communities to kidnap some individuals, but their actions would be counteracted by the community. Gunshots were fired as the crowd attempted to pounce on the armed men. At least 19 were killed and more than 70 others injured, a source told CNA.

Dozens of houses were also razed to ashes.

BnL leader reacts to the killing

“I have appealed to our members and supporters, and community leaders in Boki, Akamkpa, Ikom, and other border communities to remain calm, while we wait for their leaders to react to this provocative action of their boys. But, I want to warn that BnL will respond if the leaders of these boys failed to publicly condemn the invasion of our land.”
