Analysis: Marc Brys’ choices penalized Cameroon against Angola

Cameroon played a tie in a match which they had every chance to grab three points in. The 1-1 draw at the November 11 Stadium in Luanda was caused by little imbalances in the choices made by coach Marc Brys in the day four FIFA World Cup qualifier against Angola.

Let’s look at the defensive mistakes made by right back Jackson Tchatchoua. He was not as imposing as Nouhou Tolo on the other flank. The Angolans easily had successful crosses on the right side. Gelson Dala’s low cross deflected by Ngadeu for an own goal, happened because the Angolan forward was given enough room. At one point, Fai Collins would have been brought in. His presence would not only have had an impact behind, but in front where he exhibits a rare crossing ability.

The slight change observed in the line-up for the day four qualification match was not bad, as Bassogog who started in the place of Moumi Ngamaleu, immediately created an impact. He delivered the assist for Cameroon’s goal scored by Bryan Mbeumo in the 11th minute.

When the Ankaragucu winger was carried out on a stretcher just 19 minutes into the game, the substitution made seemed to have distorted the play. Olivier Ntcham, though a fine player, was not the best option at that moment. Either Moumie Ngamaleu or Kevin Nkoudou ought to have been brought in. The two would have also helped with set pieces. Cameroon squandered several opportunities in poorly taken free kicks and corners.

The commendable passing ability showcased by the Lions had to be complemented with good finishing. The five-time African champions were lacking in last passes and finishing.

The 1-1 draw against the Palancas Negras was a clear contrast of the 4-1 defeat over Cape Verde on June 8.

The Lions maintain their lead in group D with 8 points, while Libya and Cape Verde follow with 7 points each. Angola are fourth with 6 points, ahead of Mauritius 4 points and Eswatini with no point.
