An entrepreneur’s journey from impoverishment to creating Afrirent’s billion rand business powerhouse

In the ever-evolving landscape of African entrepreneurship, one name stands out as a beacon of inspiration – Senzo Tsabedze, the visionary leader behind Afrirent Holdings. His extraordinary journey from a poverty-stricken upbringing to the helm of a billion-rand business powerhouse is not just a tale of success but a blueprint for aspiring entrepreneurs across the continent.

Senzo Tsabedze is a South African entrepreneur and philanthropist, widely recognised for his remarkable journey from humble beginnings to becoming the founder and CEO of Afrirent Holdings.

His journey mirrors the aspirations of countless individuals across Africa. Born and raised in the impoverished Kamshayazafe village in Mpumalanga, South Africa, Senzo faced significant challenges from a young age. Growing up in a large family with eight siblings, financial struggles were a daily reality, making access to education difficult. “I didn’t enjoy school because my family was very poor. I went to school hungry and without shoes,” Mr Tsabedze recalls, reflecting on his difficult childhood.

While these circumstances would have disheartened many, Senzo’s determination propelled him to overcome adversities. His work ethic and resolve to succeed led him to explore various job opportunities, transitioning from washing dishes to working as a waiter at an Italian restaurant. With each passing day, he learned valuable skills and gained hands-on experience that would shape his future.

In 1990, Mr Tsabedze ‘s life took an unexpected turn when he secured a position as an assistant food and beverage manager at a prestigious five-star hotel in Sabi, located in the Greater Kruger National Park. This opportunity marked a significant milestone in his journey, providing him with exposure to the hospitality industry and expanding his knowledge of business operations.

While working at the Kruger National Park, the young professional seized an opportunity to supply linen to various hotels. This led to the establishment of Siyenza Consulting, marking the inception of Mr Tsabedze ‘s entrepreneurial journey. This leap of faith resulted in a three-year contract that expanded his horizons and laid the foundation for Afrirent Holdings.

Afrirent Holdings, under the astute leadership of Mr Tsabedze, has become synonymous with innovation, resilience, and unparalleled success. Established in 1990, the company is recognised as one of the few fully owned and grown Black-owned business powerhouses, valued at an impressive R1.5 billion. With diverse subsidiaries in fleet management, hospitality, fuel supply, vehicle tracking and waste management, Afrirent Holdings is evidence of Mr Tsabedze ‘s strategic vision and business acumen.

Afrirent Holdings has successfully cultivated strong partnerships and secured contracts with entities such as the City of Johannesburg, Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa, and Lafarge South Africa.

In 2021, Mr Tsabedze acquired Hans Merensky Hotel, Golf and Spa, renaming it the BaPhalaborwa Hotel, Golf and Spa. He was subsequently, awarded a tender by SANParks to construct a 110-bed hotel within the park, contributing to job creation and community development.

Annually, the group’s 700 employees are granted with approximately R2 million towards skills and development initiatives. This commitment reflects Afrirent Holdings’ dedication to continuous learning and workforce empowerment.

Mr Tsabedze ‘s impact extends beyond financial success. He founded the Tsabedze Foundation, which provides support to those in need in South Africa, including food, clothing, and medicine. The Foundation prioritises education, contributing through charitable donations, company contributions, and community involvement. It sponsors 15-20 university learners, offering scholarships to those lacking financial means. In addition to financial support, the Tsabedze Foundation establishes partnerships with universities for mentorship programmes, internships, and other opportunities to provide students with real-world experience and essential skills for their careers. To plough back to Mr Tsabedze ’s native village, the organisation purchases groceries worth R3,500 for 220 households.

An exemplary aspect of the foundation’s corporate philanthropy is seen in a recent collaboration with Global Roofing Solutions, along with the Hicks-Roche, Brown/Moyes, and Gibson families. This collaboration led to the “Raise the Roof” roofing initiative at Jabulani Primary School, located near the Kruger National Park, in partnership with the Uplands Outreach programme. When asked about his upcoming business ventures, Mr Tsabedze exudes a contagious enthusiasm for the untapped potential within the African business landscape. With a keen eye for emerging markets, he hints at his ongoing aspirations to venture into the gaming and lottery industry in Central and Southern Africa. Mr Tsabedze emphasises the strategic significance of these endeavours, citing the evolving gambling and lottery landscapes in both countries.

“Southern African countries have witnessed a growing interest in the gambling sector, with several operators exploring opportunities in sports betting, casinos, and lottery games. Meanwhile, some Central African countries, with their dynamic economy, present a promising market for the gaming industry, adds Mr Tsabedze.  He sees these initiatives not just as business endeavours but as contributions to the economic growth and entrepreneurial spirit of Africa. In his own words, “Africa holds immense potential, and my ventures aim to not only capitalise on emerging markets but also contribute to the continent’s rise as a global business hub.”

Mr Tsabedze ‘s rise from the impoverished village of Kamshayazafe to the status of a prominent business visionary stands as a testament to the transformative impact of perseverance and determination. During his extraordinary journey, Mr Tsabedze not only reshaped his own life but emerged as a driving force for positive change in his community, South Africa, and the African continent.

He has been happily married to Thenjiwe Tsabedze, who is also CFO at Afrirent Holdings for 23 years. The pair have four daughters. The eldest, recently completed her degree and joined the family business this year. Upholding Christian values and fostering an attitude of respect within their household, the Tsabedze family instils the value that personal success and wealth are earned through hard work and dedication.
