Akere Muna calls on Niat, Cavaye Djibril to act on corruption scandals in Cameroon

The Chairman of the International Anti-Corruption Conference Council, Barrister Akere Muna has called on the recently re-elected Presidents of the National Assembly and Senate, Cavaye Djibril and Marcel Niat Djifenji to act on the corruption scandals which have been plaguing the country.

This plea is contained in a letter addressed to the two structures dated April 4th, 2023.

Barrister Akere Muna raised concerns about the issue of corruption which is ravaging the nation involving high-level officials in the country.

“In recent years the nation has been shaken by corruption scandals ranging from embezzlement of funds allocated to the African Cup of Nations projects, the mismanagement of Covid-19 funds.. lines 94 and 65 of the national budget,” a section reads.

He calls on the members of government to take decisive measures and initiate action against top officials involved in corruption scandals.

“The time for half measures and hollow promises is over, we must implement measures that attack the very root of this disease or make it clear that those who engage in corrupt practices are exposed to rapid and severe actions.”

He urges them to convey a special session of the two chambers to address crucial issues like corruption in the country.

He also outlined Law No. 2018 /011 of 11th July 2018 on the code of transparency and good governance in the management of public finances Article 48 paragraph 2 which says that the press, the social partners, and in general, all civil society actors are encouraged to participate in the determination of information as well as in the public debate on the governance and management of public finances.

He regretted the fact that engaging in such debates can be perilous and cited the recent assassination of journalist Martinez Zogo which was largely attributed to the fact that he made this same debate on “governance and public finance management “.

He called on public authorities to work with Civil Society Organizations and other stakeholders to eradicate corruption in the society.
