After racist acts, Tunisia offers new measures for migrants

The Tunisian government has enforced some new measures to ease the stay of foreigners particularly sub-Saharan Africans in Tunisia.

This decision comes after several Cameroonians and other sub-Saharan African migrants in Tunisia were subjected to ill-treatment and racist infringements following President Kais Saied’declaration that on illegal immigration. This provoked violent actions against sub-Saharan Africans and caused many governments to evacuate hundreds of their citizens from the country.

After several calls by international organizations on the discrimination against sub-Saharan Africans, the Tunisian government has announced a string of new measures.

A toll-free number has been provided for migrants to report any violations of their rights, the provisions of medical and psychological assistance for all migrants is also on the table, and new residence cards for students from other African countries will be provided “to facilitate their stay on Tunisian soil.” said the President.

Consequently, certificates of residence will be extended and their validity period will increase from 3 to 6 months for nationals of several African countries. In addition, voluntary return operations will be facilitated by an organized framework and in coordination with their diplomatic mission.

Also, persons who have designated themselves for a voluntary return will no longer pay the penalty amounting to 80 dinars or €25 and up to €1000.

The Tunisian government has said they are committed to fighting against all forms of human trafficking and exploitation of irregular migrants.
