Barrister Alice Nkom vows to get justice amid seal breaks and summons

The human rights lawyer honoured a Police summons at the judicial police in Douala, littoral region on Thursday.

She had been reported by the Senior Divisional Officer of Wouri for rebellion.

Alice Nkom shared a personal message about her recent encounter with the judicial police. She was accused of “breaking seals” and “rebellion” after removing seals placed on her property without legal basis.

Alice argues that her actions were not rebellious, but rather a call for justice and respect for the law. She sees this incident as a reflection of the larger struggle against abuse of power and injustice in Cameroon, and calls on her supporters to stand with her in this fight.

“Dear friends,

I want to share with you a difficult moment I’m going through. Yesterday, I was summoned by the judicial police following a complaint filed by the prefect. I’m accused of “breaking seals” and “rebellion”.

According to them, the rebellion charge is based on my absence from two convocations. But beyond the words and accusations, I want to share the truth with you today. This case is not just an attack on me, it’s an illustration of what we must fight together: abuse of power and contempt for the law.

Yes, I removed the seals. And I say it without hesitation. But this act, far from being a rebellion, was an act in favor of justice. These seals, my friends, had no legal basis. They were not placed as part of a judicial procedure. And why? Because in a state of law, only justice – and sworn agents – have the power to place seals.

In my specific case, they came to place seals under a decree, but in this same decree, it was never provided for the placement of seals.

The role of the prefecture, my dear friends, is limited by law. The prefecture ensures the compliance of associations, nothing more. Even when an association is contested or suspended, only a court decision can justify actions such as the placement of seals. But in this specific case, there was no judicial decision, no legitimate procedure. It was nothing but an abuse of authority.

So, when I cut off those seals, I didn’t do it out of defiance. I did it because the law must be respected by all, including those who hold power. What I did was not a rebellion, it was a call for justice.

Dear friends, this moment is difficult, I know. But it’s also revealing. It reveals the path we still have to take to build a Cameroon where laws protect rather than oppress. A Cameroon where justice is not used as an instrument of fear, but as a weapon of fairness and peace.

That’s why I’m talking to you today. Not to ask for pity. Not to give in to anger. But to call on you to stand up. Because this fight is bigger than me. It’s ours. Every child, every parent, every citizen who believes that one day Cameroon can be a country where no one is above the law.

So, yes, yesterday’s summons, these accusations against me, they’re a reminder that our work is not done. But they’re also a reminder of the strength we have when we stand together. When we say no to injustice. When we insist on respect for the truth.

My friends, this fight won’t be easy. But nothing great has ever been achieved without courage. So, I ask you to stand by my side. Not just for me, but for our future. For the Cameroon we want to leave to our children. We have work to do. But together, united by our faith in justice and our hope for a better future, I know we can do it.

With all my heart and determination, MOM

Alice Nkom
