Fons ask football legend Samuel Eto’o to return artefacts
The President of the North West House of Chiefs, HRM Fon Yakum Kevin Teuvih, has publicly disassociated the region’s Fons from the coronation of Samuel Eto’o Fils, a Cameroonian football legend, as “Fon of Fons” or “NTUMFOYN”
On Friday, January 17, a coronation ceremony took place in Douala, where Samuel Eto’o was reportedly crowned “NTUMFOYN” which mena s “Fon of Fons” by Fon JU Wilson, a 3rd-class Fon from Koshin village.
Fon JU Wilson who did the coronation claimed to have represented the North West Fons during the coronation ceremony.
Reacting to this, Fon Yakum Kevin Teuvih, President of the House of Chiefs has revealed that it was unauthorized and contravenes the law, specifically Law No. 2019/024 which establishes the House of Chiefs as the legitimate authority on matters related to the region’s cultural heritage.
The president in a communique reiterated that
- There is only one “Fon of Fons”: H.E. Paul Biya, the Head of State.
- Regional titles should only be awarded by constituted authorities
- Fons are custodians of our cultural heritage_.
- The Head of State has provided a platform for Fons’ voices to be heard
- Individuals should desist from participating in or endorsing the desecration of our culture
Adding to the northwest house of chiefs, northwest Fon’s based in the Littoral region notably the Fon of Bafmeng and Bemesseng have also condemned the coronation, stating that traditional titles and regalia hold significant cultural and symbolic meaning, and their conferment requires careful consideration and consultation among Fons.
They have demanded the immediate return of the traditional artefacts used in the ceremony.
