BAMENDA, Cameroon – Two prominent Nso traditional leaders, members of the Ngumba Society called Ngwerong, Shey Komi and Shey Mbisen, have been held captive by an Ambazonian separatist group led by “Commander Cameleon” in Wainamah, Jakiri Sub-Division. The leaders were abducted on Thursday, January 9, while returning from Douala.
The reasons for their abduction remain unclear, but sources suggest that “Commander Cameleon” and his group are demanding a substantial ransom for their release. This incident follows a pattern of violence and intimidation perpetrated by the group, including the frequent harassment of drivers and civilians along the Banso-Bamenda road.
“Commander Cameleon” is known to have a history of violence, with allegations of involvement in the killing of seven civilians since the onset of the Anglophone crisis. He is also believed to be operating several businesses in Bamenda, Yaoundé, and Douala, allegedly financed through extortion and kidnapping activities.
Drivers along the Banso-Bamenda road are considering a strike in response to the escalating violence and the ongoing threat posed by “Commander Cameleon” and his group, CNA learned.
