With less than 24 hours until Christmas celebrations, the markets in Douala are flooded as residents shop for essentials. On this 24th of December 2024, heavy traffic complicates the experience, making navigation a challenge. As the clock ticks down, many are streaming into Douche Municipal Market.
While some shoppers focus on decorative items to bring festive cheer in their homes, others are simply trying to complete their holiday preparations. “The market is really crowded,” said Sheri Odette, a mother. “I’m getting decorative items for my house, and now the prices are affordable, so we are benefiting.” She added.
Financial challenges and time constraints are driving many to the market during this rush hour. Latecomers diverse obstacles due to the overwhelming influx of people, making it easy to lose sight of companions. “There is a lot of traffic, and theft is also a concern. It’s not easy, but we feel obligated to be here,” Elisa remarked.
