Senator Mbella Moki decries neglect of road projects in South West

By Nchendzengang Tatah

Ruling party senator of Fako, Mbella Moki Charles, has expressed frustration over the state of roads in the South West Region. The member of the upper house of parliament was speaking at the plenary dedicated to the 2025 state budget in Yaounde.

To the member of senate, paperwork by the minister to commence work on the road linking Bikoko, Douala to West Coast Idenau is a “mafia”. He recalled how other projects had stalled from their inception, though years had gone by.

“My story is roads! If the South Westerner wants to talk in this country the first issue will be roads,” Mbella Moki said. Moving further to put the Public Works Minister on a hot seat regarding the execution of road projects.

“Do ministers who are charged with the duty of taking care of the road network in our country, circulate here by air or by road?” The three term serving senator wondered.

Charles Mbella Moki, went on to enumerate examples of poor road networks. Which includes that linking the economic capital, Douala to Yaounde. He reflected on how bad roads linked Ekondo Titi, Ndian and Buea amongst others to the rest of the nation. A worry which the Minister Delegate for National Security had made public after a visit to the Mutengene Police College weeks back.

“Have you ever lost a relation because of bad roads, Mr Minister? Every day Cameroonians are dying because of bad roads. For how long are Cameroonians going to shout out?” the CPDM Senator cried out.

Senator Mbella Moki said the realities on the ground were distant from what the state media showed, and that the people “will not be deceived”. He also blamed the high rate of separatist activities in the South West on underdevelopment, mainly driven by the inadequate state of roads. The disgruntled senator took his seat after five minutes on the rostrum.
