New FECAFOOT statute to allow President, EXCO members up to three mandates
The President of the Cameroon Football Federation and members of the executive committee, will henceforth have up to three mandates to be at the helm of football affairs in Cameroon.
This follows a revision of the FECAFOOT statutes during the General Assembly of November 16, in Mbankomo.
It gives the current Eto’o-led administration the possibility to remain in command for up to 12 years.
Eto’o supporters had incessantly voiced the wish to see the President’s term extended. An attempt was made two years ago, to up his mandate from four to seven years, with the justification that his project was big and needed more time.
Critics accused the President of trying to cling on to power. He retracted in May 2023, and announced he had turned down the request by the executive committee for a mandate extension.
The new revision of the FECAFOOT statutes has once more raised questions about the objectives of the current administration.
Samuel Eto’o will be clocking three years as FECAFOOT President by December 11, 2024, which means he will have nine more years to be FECAFOOT boss.
Though the former footballer has been lauded for the increased popularity and visibility of the local football, as well as the absence of complaints over unpaid bonuses in the national team, his administration has so far been fraught with conflict, resignations and accusations of mismanagement and corruption. His most recent dispute is with Indomitable Lions head coach Marc Brys.
