By Stephen TADAHA

To fight the alarming insecurity in Bafoussam, the main city of the West Region, some 220 video surveillance cameras have been installed in the town.

The information was revealed in a ceremony to inaugurate the region’s surveillance control and command center on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at the esplanade of the Bafoussam central police station.

The ultramodern center according to the governor, Awah Fonka will reinforce the security of people against robbery, kidnappings, rapes, drug consumption, urban disorder, and other forms of criminality.

From the centre, police officials will be able to control all corners in the main towns of the region.

“It is an ultramodern building containing the control system of 220 video surveillance cameras. The video surveillance cameras have already been installed in some sensible corners of the region.” Governor Awa Fonka Augustine told attendees.

“Let’s note that the deployment of the cameras will in an average term integrate an intelligence aspect which will be able to automatically detect the types of crimes and facial recognition. In the second phase whose funding has been approved by the hierarchy, the project will be extended to the quarters of all 8 divisions and in some sensible areas of the region ” Mr Fonka added.

With this new and ultramodern infrastructure whose technical support comes from the Cameroon Telecommunications (Camtel) and Huawei, the police increased its means of surveillance while hoping to efficiently contribute in the fight against the growing insecurity in the West. The areas where the cameras have been installed have not been made public.
