By Charity Nginyu

In a male-dominated political landscape, one woman is challenging the status quo and making history in Chad’s upcoming presidential election.

Meet Lydie Beassemda, the female candidate defying expectations and vying for the highest office in Chad.

At 57 years old, Beassemda stands as the lone female contender among a field of nine male candidates, including the incumbent transitional President and Prime Minister.

Hailing from a background in academia and government service, Beassemda currently serves as the Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research, and Innovation.

Beassemda’s journey into politics began in 2021 when she made her debut in the presidential race. Despite facing formidable opponents, she captured the attention of the nation by securing the third position in the election—an achievement that solidified her reputation as a formidable force in Chadian politics.

Now, Beassemda gears up for the 2024 election, as she once again is poised to make her mark on history. With a platform focused on promoting education, fostering scientific innovation, and advocating for gender equality, she aims to address the pressing issues facing Chad and usher in a new era of progress and prosperity.

As the nation prepares for the upcoming election on May 6th, all eyes are on Beassemda as she embarks on her quest to make history as Chad’s first female president.
