Scandal at SED: Man brutally beaten, dies in Gendarme custody

By Eratus Ndueh

The Defense State Secretariat (SED) has been the subject of a scandal, accused of brutality having led to the death of Beranger lgnamoune Wapou, a young UNESCO employee. The incident, which occurred in the Nsam Escales district of Yaounde, raised questions about the methods of the government agency.

Family sources said Wapou was brutally arrested in front of his family home, and coercively transported to the SED premises on Wednesday, December 27, 2023. The next morning, his lifeless body was discovered in his cell, without explanation.

Elements of the SED have so far avoided providing details to the bereaved family, leaving a mystery surrounding Wapou’s sudden demise. The link between the violence suffered during his arrest and his death remains unsettling, especially since the young employee of UNESCO was in good health during his arrest according to reports.

The Nsam Escales district has since then been plunged into bewilderment and worries with some residents insinuating the possibility of revenge. Residents believe that such acts must not go unpunished, demanding the truth about this tragic event.

This case raises broader concerns about SED practices and calls for extensive investigation to ensure justice. Authorities face increasing pressure to shed light on this incident and take action against any form of power abuse within the defense agency.
