Yaounde city dwellers pray for energy during festive celebrations

A few weeks to the celebration of Christmas and New Year, Yaounde has for the past days been experiencing frequent power failure.

Enterprises and households groan over the frequent power outages and epileptic supply of electricity that they say leads to the destabilization of their businesses as end-of-year events approach.

CNA spoke with the staff of a barber shop in the Melen neighborhood. At the time the reporter met them, they were glued to their phones having no work to do because of no electricity.

“It is a very disturbing situation for us, we cannot work without the electricity, so we only have to sit and wait for it to be back,” a worker, Fur Nelly said.

He further stated that; “We have lost a lot of customers because when many come and notice there is no electricity, they just leave. Even those who are already there when the lights go off, you have to beg them to wait for the lights to be back, the funny thing is you are not even sure if it will be back soon,”.

Some workplaces have devised survival tactics to quench the situation, though at another cost. The generators they say help them when the lights go off but they complain of high fuel prices.

Restaurants and fast food locations are not left out as foodstuffs kept in the fridges are getting bad and beverages are not cold enough for customers.

With the repeated power cuts, increased bills, and the festive period at hand, these small and medium-sized business holders and households are all worried.
