Cameroon MPs adopt military cooperation law with Russia
By Stephen TADAHA
Members of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Cameroon National Assembly on Tuesday, November 28, 2023, during the 3rd ordinary session of Parliament, adopted a new law on military cooperation between Cameroon and Russia.
The law will enable the sharing of information linked to defense policies, joint military training, and shared experiences in the domain of peace maintenance. After this adoption, the law is expected to be promulgated by the Head of State for its effective application.
Cameroon is therefore in this way maintaining and reinforcing its ties with the country of Vladimir Putin. Russia has been supporting Cameroon’s firefighting unit with technical skill sharing and donation of equipment.
On April 12, 2022, the two countries signed a military cooperation agreement for five years. The agreement was signed in the context of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, where Western countries were against Russia and its “allies.”
The signing of the agreement was also part of the Russian strategy in sub-Saharan Africa as Moscow seemed to be positioning herself as a major player in counter-terrorism in Africa, thus multiplying agreements with African countries.
