Teachers stranded in Yaounde, treasury says no money
Teachers hoping to collect their first salaries have been stranded in the nation’s capital, Yaounde. CNA gathered that dozens who came to the Treasury opposite Cameroon Postal Services, in Bastos Yaoundé where teachers receive their first salaries.
“Teachers, most of whom are supposed to collect their first salaries at the treasury in Yaoundé have been here since yesterday and we have been told there is no money,” one of the teachers said.
“I had to travel from my place of work to Yaoundé yesterday and I have been forced to sleep here. Some don’t even have where to sleep not to talk of transportation to return If the state Treasury does not have money where has the money in this country gone to?” he added.
On Monday, November 27, 2023, several first-time salary earners in the teaching profession were forced to spend the night on the streets because there was no money.
On Tuesday evening, the Treasury started paying some teachers who the exercise will last for days, a teacher said, adding that though he collected, he left a good number of colleagues behind.
Before first-time teachers collect their salaries, they must have taught for months would presume that during these months, the Treasury is expected to be aware of their situation and work accordingly to avoid last-minute rush.
