Government vows to eradicate sale of illicit fuel
The Minister of Water and Energy Resources Gaston Eloundou Essomba, has said government’s crackdown on vendors of illicit fuel in Cameroon will not stop till “the few others that are left decide to quit”.
According to Minister Eloundou, a recent operation carried out by the national brigade for the fight against illicit petroleum products, shows that the fight has recorded “significant progress”.
He said they are putting in more effort to discourage the “few other vendors left”.
The operation carried out between November 15-17 along the Yaounde – Bertoua highway, ended with the confiscation of 5,245 litres of fuel. A truck intercepted in Nkolafamba, Yaounde, in the exercise, was carrying 5,000 litres of the contraband oil, the minister pointed out.
MINEE has highlighted logistic problems as the reason for a continuous shortage in the country, which is partly contributing to illegal fuel circulation. It says the ship that is expected to arrive in Cameroon soon with fuel, is facing a delay.
