Victoria United to leave Elite One?
Several sources close to players have said that the newly promoted Elite One team, Victoria United, has asked players and staff to “go home” and look for other clubs, but the Club has not made any official statement.
The club is also said to have withdrawn from this year’s Elite One competition, after boycotting day 4 last Saturday against APEJES of Mfou.
Cameroon News Agency has reached out to the Club through their official contact, for comments.
The team had protested a 2-1 win against them by Fovu of Baham in a day three encounter. The second penalty awarded to their opponent provoked the staff and players who
The next match on Saturday, October 21, 2023, Victoria United boycotted and instead released a video where players and staff are chanting.
Pundits have said the Club’s president is only playing a trick to mount pressure on the President of the Cameroon Football Federation, Samuel Eto’o Fils. Nkwain Valentine and Eto’o are said to be “good friends” especially as the former campaigned for the success of the latter.
However, match-fixing scandals implicating Eto’o and Nkwain surfaced with leaked voice notes between the two, discussing how the Limbe-based club was going to be promoted to the Elite One championship. Less than a year later, the club was in the country’s top-flight club competition.
While Eto’o confirmed that the voice in the leaked audio was his, Nkwain threatened that he would jail anyone who tagged him as the caller.
The owner of Njalla Quan Sports Academy, another Limbe-based club said he knew one day something was going to happen concerning Victoria United. Though the information has not been confirmed, Henry said they will remain vigilant, “I knew vindication would come, but this is too soon! It’s only the beginning! We remain vigilant and steadfast while observing the dismantling of the Mbro gang!”
Pundits are also of the opinion that the President of Victoria United must have hinted that his team would go back to the inferior division following investigations launched by CAF and the Cameroon government.
The Confederation of African Football, CAF, in a release on Wednesday AUgust 9, 2023, said they have opened an investigation into improper behavior by the former Inter and FC Barcelona player.
