West Region: Rural women decry lack of tools, theft
By Stephen TADAHA
Rural Women in the Bamboutos division say they lack the tools to transform their farm produce and are tired of food theft on their farms.
The women from all four subdivisions making up the Bamboutos made their voices heard at the Mbouda ceremonial ground in a ceremony to mark the 28th International Day of Rural Women, observed on Sunday, October 15 under the theme ” “Rural Women Cultivating Good Food for All”.
The ceremony was presided over by the Senior divisional officer for Bamboutos, David Dador Dibango who promised to seek lasting solutions to the nightmare faced by rural women and to inform his hierarchy of the resolution of other problems. The ceremony also saw the celebration of 35 joint marriages.
The International Day of Rural Women is a chance to celebrate women and girls who play a key role in rural areas enhancing agricultural development, building climate resilience, and facing malnutrition and food insecurity.
This year’s theme highlights the essential role that rural women and girls play in the food systems of the world.
According to the Great Africa Pastoral Journal, 36% of agrifood workers in the world are women, yet Rural Women earn nearly 20% less than men and have reduced access to land, credit, technology, and information.
