MINAT boss says bike riders must get identified, or receive sanctions

The Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji, has reiterated the urgent need for all commercial Motorcycle drivers to identify themselves in order to secure the people they transport.
He spoke in a meeting with a syndicate of truck drivers and commercial motorbike riders in Yaounde on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, on the heels of numerous crimes being reported in the capital city.
Between the months of August and September 2023, more than 700 cases of assault have been recorded, 300 cases of rape, 900 cases of serious accidents.
Reports indicate that of the over 6000 motorbike riders in Yaounde, less than 2000 are identified with the required documents. The documents include the presentation of a national identity card, obtaining a driving license of the category, registering the motorbike, and compulsory wearing of a numbered chasuble or jacket.
Minister Atanga Nji stated that many of these motorbike riders refuse to be identified.
“It is for this reason that we invited the motorbike Union to make them face their responsibilities by saying clearly that “enough is enough”. A clear choice is left to everyone, either we choose to be identified and we practice this profession, or we refuse, and stop practicing. In any case, offenders will face the rigor of the law.
“I also want to issue a severe warning to motorbike riders who attack women, men, and children, those specializing in armed robberies, those whose taxis are paid to murder peaceful citizens, and especially those who refuse to be identified” he further said.
He announced that after October 30, 2023, repressions will follow.
