NWR: As crisis prevails, at least 75,000 students still missing

The regional delegate of secondary education for the North West region, Ngwang Roland revealed that about 75,000 students are still nowhere to be found, since the crisis started in 2016.

The delegate revealed the statistics on Wednesday, August 23, 2023, during the sector conference to launch the 2023/2024 school year in the region.

The event brought together secondary education stakeholders in the region like divisional delegates, principals, and many other personalities.

He said overall afflictions on both teachers and students in the region stood at 110 against 90 of the previous year. 8 students were attacked and kidnapped, 58 teachers faced attacks and kidnap, while 11 schools were attacked.

According to Ngwang Roland, continuous Monday ghost towns and lockdowns have caused the situation to become very difficult for both teachers and students.

“The significance was good, but we are still not very satisfied because we are unable to recover all the students. This year our emphasis is to recover all of them,” Ngwang Roland said.

Governor Adolphe Lele during the conference called on parents to make sure they send their children to school, as preparations are going on for a smooth start of the new school year.

“Classes are already open and the school family is mobilized. The number of enrollment is expected to increase this year,” Adolphe Lele.

Despite the difficult situation, the North West region still emerged 4th in the GCE ordinary level nationwide.
