Bamenda: works resume at proximity stadium, fans say taking too long

By Vera Fon

Football Fans have lamented over the slow rate of work at the still uncompleted Bamenda Proximity Stadium.

The project which was supposed to be completed by December 31st 2022 is yet to be completed 5 months after the deadline.

In an Interview with CRTV Bamenda, the FECAFOOT North West President Mbigha Felix said works have resumed and there is much progress.

According to some fans, the delay in the construction has caused clubs from the region to lose most of their games putting them in the relegation zone this season.

“The population of Bamenda were very happy when works for the FECAFOOT promised proxy stadium finally kicked off some time in October last year. As was explained by the regional president of FECAFOOT for the North West, the stadium was supposed to be completed and handed over in December 2022. To the greatest surprise of the population, it’s 7 months now after and work done is not even half way completed,” a fan lamented.

“Is this a classroom or a football field because with the kind of pillers I wonder the kind of field they are about to construct. It’s better they complete the municipal stadium because even in 2030, they won’t have completed this stadium,” another added.

It should be recalled that on April 20 2016, the then FECAFOOT President Tombi A Roko Sidiki accompanied by North West Governor Adolph Lele L’Afrique laid the foundation stone of what was described as the Bamenda Olympic Stadium. Works were halted just months after the laying of the foundation stone. Seven years later, the stadium is still abandoned.
