North west reconstruction: Ebune and team on evaluation mission

The population of the North West region has been urged to collaborate with stakeholders involved in executing the reconstruction plan for the development of the trouble – hit regions of Cameroon.

The call was made this March 28th by the President of the Presidential Plan for the Reconstruction and Development of the North West and South West Regions (PPRD – NW/SW) Balungeli Confiance Ebune as he headed the Steering Committee of the Presidential Plan for the Reconstruction and Development of the North West and South West regions.

“Time has come, wherein we should take our destinies into our hands, we either take it or shy to the threats of those who don’t want development,” Ebune declared.

The team made its first stop in Donga Mantung division alongside a delegation comprised of Governor Adolphe Lele Lafrique, the President of the North West Regional Assembly, SDOs, DOs, Mayors, Regional Delegates of water and energy, communication, public works, and of secondary as well as basic education.

During the meeting, the implementing partner of the project, the UNDP, through its coordinator Mary Nyuryinui, revealed that 4 women empowerment centers have been built and equipped by the project in the region. In terms of infrastructure, the project has rehabilitated and equipped 30 schools, 8 water points have been powered by solar energy, 30 farmers have had their farms rehabilitated and 37 women corporatives and poultry farmers have been supported.

A job that was greatly appreciated by Fon Angwafor III who pleaded with the UNDP to take into account the vulnerable population and consider inclusiveness, in the implementation process.

Governor Adolphe Lele Lafrique on the his part while appreciating the works done so far, revealed that many are already returning to their villages where they are carrying on their daily activities hitchfree.

“Though the road to Nkambe is horrible in some parts, the people are fed up and the population of the North West region in general is expecting that the PPRD will help them to rebuild better,” Governor Lele Lafrique said.

As major difficulties encountered in the execution of the plan, the UNDP coordinator revealed that bad roads have hindered them from accessing some enclaved areas where projects had to be realized.

The start up budget for this project stood at F CFA 10 billion from the government of Cameroon, the PPRD received F CFA 2.8 billion from the Japanese government.

The evaluation visit continues this day.
