Hours of downpours in Yaounde on March 21, 2023, caused huge floods in some parts of the city, especially in the center of town.
Water from the Mingoa River is reported to have invaded major roads causing traffic and hindering movements.
According to the National Observatory on Climate Change, ONAC in a recent climate alert and forecast, there will be heavy rains in the Centre, Littoral, East, South, North West, and West regions from March 21st to 30th, 2023.
“There will be a gradual end of the dry season in the Adamawa region and continuation of the dry season in the Far North and North regions where sporadic rainfall will be recorded in certain localities,” they also stated.
Due to the heavy rains, the period from March 21 to 30 will be marked by high risks of flooding situations, ONACC noted.
In Yaoundé, this phenomenon is common each time it rains for hours. This often causes traffic on major roads and even the destruction of houses and properties.
It should be recalled that in December 2021, the African Development Bank, AfDB granted a loan of $38.55 million to Cameroon to finance the Complementary Sustainable Sanitation Project of the city of Yaoundé (Pcady).
It is aimed at significantly reducing the frequency of floods in the city in the context of climate change while making the necessary adjustments to increase the expected results.
The first and second phases of the PCADY project contributed to significantly reducing the frequency and effects of flooding in some parts of the city but however, but the situation is still recurrent each year.
