Bloodbath in Buea: At least 18 die same spot in one week, Mr. Mayor this is too much!

Nine people were reported dead and one injured in yet another tragic incident that occurred along the Muea-EKona highway in Fako division, South West region.

This has brought to a total of 17 people who have lost their lives within one week.

On Friday, December 16, 2022, a small commercial private car with light green color crashed into a truck along the same road where the garbage collection company, HYSACAM, incinerates refuse. Nine people died on the spot while one person was transported to the Buea regional hospital for urgent medical care.

Earlier on Wednesday, December 14, 2022, Seven passengers lost their lives in the same spot after their car was hit by a truck. Days before the incident, two reportedly died on the same spot, making it 17 in one week.

Apart from the bad road between Muea and EKona districts, the area where the three accidents have occurred is usually covered with smoke, making driver’s visibility difficult.

The garbage collection company doe snot recycle the waste but incinerates them causing chunks of smoke to cover the entire road. Drivers plying this road find it difficult to determine what is parked in front of them or if a car is oncoming.

The Mayor of Buea on whose authority, HYSACAM operates, should know that things are getting worst. The waste and sanitation company should look for alternative means to dispose of collections rather than burn them on the highway not only causing accidents, but also environmental hazards.
