CDC resurrects banana sector despite devastating six-year-old conflict

The Cameroon Development Corporation, CDC, the second employer in Cameroon has reportedly increased banana production despite challenges faced by workers in the ongoing armed conflict in the English-speaking regions, where the majority of CDC production takes place,

According to information, Banana producers in Cameroon exported close to 18 000 tons of Banana in the month of October 2022 of which 15, 141 tons were from the Banana plantation of Upper Penja and 1 153 tons were produced and exported by the BOH plantation.

These Statistics were revealed in a monthly report showing the company’s performance in the sector.

The statistics reveal that the Cameroon Development Corporation (CDC) produced 1636 tons, an increase of 345 tons as compared to the same period last year when the company produced 1291 tons. Meaning a 26.7% increase from the second largest employer in Cameroon after the public service, and far from being the company’s best, according to Investor au Cameroun. Banana production was rehabilitated at the CDC only in the year 2021.

In total, 17 930 tons were produced and exported in October 2022 by the Association of Banana producers as compared to the 16 109 produced in the month of September. This means that Banana production last month witnessed a 2.2% increase, thanks to the efforts of the BOH and CDC.
