Bassa people demand creation of new region for them

The Bassa people in Cameroon have written a petition to the government demanding the creation of a region for the Bassa people who were separated by the formation of the Littoral and Centre regions and abandoned in suffering by authorities.

Some Bassa elites met in Eseka this week to elaborate on strategies to see into what they term reinstatement of “La Grande Sanaga Maritime region” that formerly existed grouping the Bassa people as one before it was later partitioned to two regions, the Littoral and Centre regions.

According to them, this division has affected their cultural identity, promoted communal cohesion problem as well as conflicts and slowed down development.

The elites think, the grant of this region to the Bassa people will address all their plights since it will reinstate peace, social cohesion, living together, bring back the lost cultural values and be a support to government’s emergence drive.

The Bassa elites affirm the quest for a region will work because it is a just move that does not aim at generating violence, hurting anyone, or institution.

“We are determined to push through with our demand. Yes it will work. We are however aware it will affect the territorial boundaries. This is where the problem lies since much work needs to be done. We believe the administration will reason with us and give life to this wish. At the end of this procedure, we greatly expect the creation of this “Grand Sanaga Maritime region” said one of the Bassa elites.
