Mindef admits its forces killed 9 civilians in Menchum

The Director of Communications at the ministry of defense, Cyrille Atonfack confirmed earlier reports by CNA that Government forces had killed 9 civilians in Missong village in Fungom subdivision, Menchum Division in the North West Region.

The communique reveals that the four forces stationed in the village have been arrested.

They were returning from a patrol and immediately sent to search for a missing soldier. But the four accused the population of killing their colleague.

Though the defense ministry said the villagers started attacking the government forces, CNA was reliably informed that the villagers were instead intimidated, tortured, and shot that night.

“In an inappropriate reaction, unsuited to the circumstances and grossly disproportionate to the hostile villager’s refusal to cooperate, and fearing the worst for themselves and their missing comrade, the soldiers in a hasty reaction of self-protection and in defiance of the sacrosanct principles of Precautions, used their weapons.” The communique partially read.

However, the ministry did not say how an 18-month-old child was also part of the resistance, talkless of the female victims.
