The Rise of the Sawa majority
It is believed that for many years, Elites and Members of Parliament from the Wouri have never represented the interest of the Sawa people in Douala, Littoral Region.
The locals have been subjected to bear the destruction of their properties in the name of development.
Development is a good thing especially when both parties are fully compensated ( win-win) But the people of the Sawa community say for a long time now, the expropriation of their land by the government has crossed the redline.
It is true that most houses constructed in Douala do not match the standard of economic capital.
to remedy this situation, there have been government, private and government-private initiatives aimed at giving a facelift to the city but this does not go without stepping on toes.
Recently, the government entered a deal with a private individual to construct a hotel called the Marriot hotel in Douala. Locals occupying the land were compensated while others refused to collect the compensation.
But as the last machines came crushing the few remaining houses, tension mounted, temper flared and the people rose against the destruction.
It is believed that the Elites and some traditional authorities have lost their voices because they were also compensated.
What do the Sawas want?
Government should stop expropriation of their land
Any compensation as a result of expropriation must match the value of the land in question
Gendarmes and Police officers on Thursday, May 26, 2022, answered the call of local administrators to maintain peace and make sure that the protest by the Sawa community does not use the opportunity to attack institutions of the Republic.
