Higher education minister explains what will happen to graduates of teachers’ training schools

The information went viral on social media last week. Teachers, it was said, would no longer benefit from direct integration. Higher education minister Jacques Fame Ndongo has come to out to explain what the population should know about this measure.

He begins by emphasizing that it is a proposal of two ministers (higher education and public service) which has been submitted to hierarchy for approval and no decision has been taken yet.

In a scenario where this proposal is adopted by hierarchy, equity and rationality will be applied and so graduates of the teachers’ training schools should in no way feel thrown in the lions’ den.

The meaning of the 2023 date in the communique circulated online is that teachers currently receiving training in all 8 recognized institutions in Cameroon will be integrated into the public service because they were admitted according to quotas given by the Prime Minister. So people going in to these schools this 2022 will be integrated. It is from the years 2025 /2026 that this measure will be implemented if approved.

Both ministries of public service and higher education will maintain their roles as currently being done if this is approved by hierarchy. This means that the ministry of higher education will ensure the proper training of teachers while that of public service and administrative reforms (MINFOPRA) will ensure that integration is done on a fair balance.

Minister Jacques Fame Ndongo ends by emphasizing that it is a process which started years ago with the organization by MINFOPRA of integration exams in the sectors of medicine, communication and agronomy to name but these and is simply being extended to the teaching sector.
