AFCON 2023 attracts over 2 billion global views, increased revenue

The 2023 African Cup of Nations showed significant improvements across various aspects such as increased viewership, competition revenue, coverage, reach, and overall competitiveness.

According to Dr. Patrick Motsepe, the President of the Confederation of African Football CAF, the tournament attracted over 2 billion global views.

“We have had close to 2 Billion people watching AFCON globally. Mr Motsepe told the press.

The significant increase in viewership was attributed to expanded broadcast rights and media coverage, commercial partnerships, and the power of social media.

Matches were aired in roughly 180 countries through a series of deals with various partners, including well-known broadcasters such as Sky, Canal+, beIN Sport, and BBC, among others.

The influence of social media platforms such as TikTok, Twitter, and Instagram also played a key role in driving visibility for teams, brands, and federations across the tournament.

In revenue, London-based market research firm GlobalData estimated that CAF has earned about $75 million in sponsorship revenue from this year’s AFCON which had 17 commercial partners including title sponsor TotalEnergies, 1xBet, Orange, and Unilever.

“We should be proud as Africans, and the next one will be even better.” Dr. Motsepe remarked,
