By Hans Ngala (with details from Vanguard)

A 32-year-old Nigerian banker has killed herself at a leading bank in the Nigerian city of Ikorodu in Lagos State because of the country’s bleak financial future.

According to Nigerian news outlet, Vanguard, Amarachi Ugochukwu was said to have left her office desk on January 8 to go to the bank’s restroom. She is reported to have left her phone on her desk and also to have locked the restroom door from inside.

Colleagues got worried after her long absence became noticed and a frantic search for her began, coupled with the fact that her phone kept ringing on her desk and there was no response.

When they got to the restroom and knocked on the door, they were greeted with silence from the other side.

In panic, they pried the door open and Amarachi was on the bathroom floor – motionless.

A suicide note she had written in her 2024 diary lay beside her and read:

“Nothing is working in my life. My brain is clogged up. The economy is getting harder. My decisions are wrong. My mind is messed up. The future doesn’t seem bright at all, I see extreme hardship, and I can’t bear the pain anymore. I’m sorry Mom, I’m sorry Dad…”.

She further apologized to five other persons, mentioning their names, and ended the note with “Dear Lord, have mercy on me”.

According to the report, her colleagues said a doctor who was invited, confirmed she was dead.
